Airdrop Shelter

Airdrop Shelter is a project designed by Rita Giesbers. She graduated in February 2007 with this project on the Utrecht School of the Arts, course Industrial Design. Fascinated by the phenomenon 'mobile shelters' Rita Giesbers researched the way people create a shelter, from nomad to camper, from backpacker to refugee. For the shelters of this last group, refugees, she contacted Doctors without Borders (FSU). Out of the conversations with experts from the FSU she learned there is no solution available yet to deliver emergency-tents to impassable places. The Airdrop Shelter suggests a better refugee-tent; the tent can be dropped from a plane so it is useable in every possible area. Remarkable is that the parachute serves as a tent roof. The packet contains all possible gear needed, a drawn manual and potential a foldable stove. Besides that, the tent is meant to be cosier than existing tents: 'When you are a victim of catastrophe, have lost a lot and the only property you have is the tent, you need a save and secure place to survive.' By giving the tent a closed shape, the possibility to use a stove and to print a nice pattern on the inside of the tent, Rita wanted to create more domesticity. The Airdrop Shelter results, for the refugee after he has lost everything, into a save area that not only takes care of a roof above his head, but also generates a warm and secure place.
